Zejt the Label

Welcome to the world of Zejt, i'm Gemma, the founder.. designer.. social media manager.. the list goes on & a toddler mum from Melbourne, Australia.
I’ve always loved fashion.. but after having a baby, dealing with endometriosis, bloating & busy day-to-day life things, I couldn’t find a single piece of clothing that didn’t make me feel like either a sausage or a slob. To be honest, I really let my clothing go rouge. I would chuck the first thing I saw on each day.

Zejt was born from that messy middle ground!
It came from not knowing what the hell to wear anymore.
Standing in front of my wardrobe thinking, “Nothing fits right, nothing looks like me.” or at least how I wanted to look...

Why "Zejt"?

Zejt means olive oil in Maltese.
It’s a nod to my family, my culture & all the good things in life that start at the table with too much hobz (bread).
My nunna (grandmother) taught me how to sew when I was little, making and designing all the clothes for my Bratz dolls. We make every single scrunchie for Zejt together, by hand.
She’s the real MVP. She always dreamt of being a Children's fashion designer, the world now is full of technology, so it's tricky... even for me! but we get to enjoy this process working on accessories for Zejt together. and yes, she can't get over the fact that I called a clothing label Zejt.

Why I needed to create Zejt

After I had my baby, I didn’t recognise my body at all anymore.
It took 2 years to even look remotely like myself again and accept the changes.
Clothes either dug into all the wrong places, or looked like I was about to mop the floor. There was no in between.

Add in a lovely combo of:

  • Constant bloating from endometriosis

  • Recovery from laparoscopy surgery

  • The general chaos of trying to keep a small human alive

…and suddenly the act of getting dressed felt overwhelming.

I needed clothes that didn’t require thinking.

I wanted to be complimented for my outfits again, rather than just blend in with a careless fit.
So I made them. I wore my first designs for 6 months and I was amazed, I genuinely did get compliments!!

People who knew about Zejt would stop me and say "Omg, are these yours?!" and strangers would ask where they can buy them. It felt so good to be noticed again, for all the right reasons - Zejt.
Comfortable. Easy to style. Neutral tones. Pieces that go with literally everything.
Nothing itchy. Nothing tight where it shouldn’t be. Nothing that makes you feel like you're wearing someone else’s life. #impostersyndrome
